Surviving Flu Season

Seasonal flu and H1N1 have predictable symptoms, including high fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea.

If you are generally in good health and you are not experiencing shortness of breath, please do the following:

  • Stay at home, because influenza prescriptions are not indicated in this situation
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink plenty of liquids
  • Use over-the-counter fever reducers, such as Tylenol
  • Avoid contact with others
  • Avoid any aspirin or aspirin-containing products

If you are experiencing shortness of breath or you are in one of the following groups, call your medical provider, as you may need to be evaluated.

  • Pregnant women
  • People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
  • Health care and emergency medical services personnel
  • People between the ages of 6 months through 24 years of age
  • People of any age who are at high risk due to chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems, including patients with diabetes, asthma, emphysema or COPD, coronary heart disease and heart failure, chronic kidney failure, AIDS and other immune deficiency diseases, and spinal cord problems which impair breathing capacity

If you are concerned about symptoms in your young child or baby, please call your child’s medical provider to discuss your questions and to determine if your child needs a medical evaluation.

Please Note: If you present at a Fallon Clinic site with flu-like symptoms, you may be asked to wear a mask for the duration of your visit. This helps to avoid the spread of germs.

Check our website regularly to receive updates on Fallon Clinic's H1N1 vaccination plans. We invite you to peruse this site for important information about seasonal flu and H1N1.
