Fallon Clinic’s Dr. Kala Seetharaman Named Community Faculty Educator
— UMass Medical School Award Recognizes Excellence in Undergraduate Medical Education in Community Setting —
WORCESTER, Mass., April 28, 2005 — Kala Seetharaman, MD, a medical oncologist at Fallon Clinic and division director for oncology at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester Medical Center , has been named Community Faculty Educator by the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) during its annual Faculty Awards celebration. The awards celebrate the educational excellence, dedication, passion and creativity of individuals within UMMS and the greater Worcester community.
“Dr. Seetharaman is an excellent educator who is also a past recipient of Fallon Clinic’s Teacher of the Year award,” said Dr. Baltej S. Maini, chief executive officer at Fallon Clinic. “Her continued passion for and dedication to education are exemplary, and Fallon Clinic is honored to count her among our fine group of physicians.”
Dr. Seetharaman has been with Fallon Clinic for 10 years, where she specializes in hematology and oncology. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, she teaches at least six oncology medical students a year and participates in attending rounds and morning reports. She received her medical degree from Government Medical College in Karnataka, India, completed her residency at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and conducted a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Mass General Hospital in Boston. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, she is also board-certified in hematology and oncology, and she has been involved in undergraduate education at UMass Medical School for the past 10 years.
“Students tell me all the time that Dr. Seetharaman does a lot of teaching when she consults on their patients,” said Dr. Robert Baldor, director of the Office of Community-Based Education at UMMS, who presented her with the award. “She is one of the kindest physicians at St. Vincent Hospital and a powerful role model for students.”
