Ever since she began being treated for an eye problem as a child, Dr. Melissa Doucette has been interested in optometry as a career. “When I was younger it was always in the back of my mind that optometry would make a great career for me,” she explains. “I’m glad I made the choice, it’s a very rewarding profession to be a part of.”
Whenever she sees patients, Dr. Doucette likes to stress the importance of regular eye exams – even for patients who don’t wear glasses or contacts. “There are some eye diseases that don’t have symptoms. That’s why everyone needs to have a yearly eye exam – it’s an important step in safeguarding your vision. With the technology we have now, we can catch problems patients don’t even know they have.”
Dr. Doucette is a big believer in listening carefully to each patient she works with. “I always make a point to determine why they have come to see me and what their real needs are. You want each patient to leave satisfied with their visit, that’s very important to me.”
Before coming to Fallon Clinic, Dr. Doucette worked as an optometrist for some retail eyeglass chains. “I like the environment here a lot more. Fallon Clinic uses a computerized health record for each patient which makes it easy to provide care. It’s also easier here to make sure a problem is followed up on – that’s not always the case in a retail setting. Plus we have a whole network of optometrists and ophthalmologists at Fallon Clinic. It’s very convenient to refer a patient to a specialist if they need more extensive care for a problem such as glaucoma.”
During her free time away from her patients, Dr. Doucette enjoys cooking and gardening as well as different outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. “Central Massachusetts is a beautiful place to live and my husband and I really enjoy being outside and taking it all in.”
