Before Dr. Karen Ammerman joined Fallon Clinic, she had never even heard of the city of Worcester. “I was originally from upstate New York and went to medical school at the University of Rochester. It wasn’t until my husband, a physiologist, found a job in Worcester that I was introduced to this city. We both really enjoy working in Central Massachusetts now.” Dr. Ammerman sees patients in Webster and also at the Worcester Medical Center, and has helped to start hundreds of families in this area.
An experienced OB-Gyn physician, Dr. Karen Ammerman truly enjoys taking care of women. “I love delivering babies. When you deliver a baby, it really makes you feel like you are having a positive impact on people’s lives. Plus you are seeing people at a very special time in their lives. Fortunately, for patients and doctors, it’s usually a very happy time.”
Dr. Ammerman enjoys the challenge of being an OB-Gyn physician even when things don’t go perfectly. “For me, it’s very exciting to work on difficult cases and be able to help people through difficult situations. We train hard to be able to get people through emergencies. It’s very satisfying when you know you have saved a mother’s or a baby’s life, it makes everything worthwhile.”
During her time as a physician, Dr. Ammerman has seen how new technology has changed the way OB-Gyn physicians practice. “Minimally invasive surgery has really come to the fore in OB-Gyn now. Many of the procedures we do now utilize a laparoscope, so we can avoid or minimize incisions and it allows patients to recover in a shorter amount of time.”
Speaking to Dr. Ammerman, it’s clear she enjoys being part of a large group practice that allows her to concentrate on providing great patient care. “I knew from the start that I wanted to practice medicine without the issues of running a business. It’s a very enjoyable experience working here, even now after 25 years. I really enjoy being in a group setting with all the camaraderie and support from other physicians in the practice.”
When she is not seeing patients in Webster or delivering babies at the Worcester Medical Center, Dr. Ammerman enjoys the outdoors and playing a variety of sports including golf, waterskiing, and cross-country skiing. She is an excellent golfer with a handicap of 12 and has even won some local club championships. “Whether you’re competing against others or just yourself, golf is always a challenging sport.”
