Originally from California, Dr. Craig Best decided practicing medicine in Massachusetts would suit him best. “When I finished my residency at the University of California San Francisco Valley Medical Center, I was interested in doing a fellowship outside of California. So I interviewed at Harvard, Yale, and Baylor, and wound up being accepted for the Harvard fellowship,” he explains. “This helped settle me in Massachusetts and I’ve been here ever since.”
One of the reasons Dr. Best became a physician was his experience as a young man. When he was a teenager he developed a bone disease and spent a lot of time being treated by doctors and physical therapists. “Through this, I began working in hospitals as a janitor, then an orderly, then a nurse’s aide, and ultimately decided that I wanted to become a doctor,” he recalls. “Then I took a year off from my college studies and spent the time helping out at a hospital in the highlands of Papua, New Guinea. Doing that really solidified my desire to go into medicine and help others.”
Dr. Best is very focused on providing the best care experience possible with all his patients. “I think the small things that physicians do with patients can make a great deal of difference. Making that extra phone call, taking the time to talk to a family and communicate well with them…patients really appreciate that.”
As well as being the Chair of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at Fallon Clinic, Dr. Best is also Chief of the OB-GYN program at Saint Vincent Hospital. “I enjoy being an administrator and leading these respective departments. I think it’s important to make sure that we are delivering the highest level of care that we can here.”
Although he performs many types of surgical procedures to help women, one of Dr. Best’s chief interests is Urogynecology, the treatment of women with incontinence. This now makes up a large portion of his practice. “I enjoy treating incontinence, which many women suffer from. Through surgery, we can correct vaginal prolapse and other causes of incontinence. We also have other methods of treatment that are effective. I would encourage any women suffering from incontinence to talk to their doctor about it. With so many good treatments available, there’s no reason to suffer from this condition.”
When he is not busy with his patients, Dr. Best enjoys playing golf, cycling, and swimming, and also enjoys riding horses, skeet shooting, scuba diving and snorkeling when he has the time.
