Although Dr. Craig Brotsky has been an optometrist for many years, when he was younger he wasn’t sure what career was best for him. “Fortunately, my wife was an optician and she encouraged me to go into optometry,” he recalls. “It was a real blessing. In Optometry I found more than a job – it was a profession that I really loved.”

In addition to making sure that patients receive the best eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions for their needs, Dr. Brotsky treats many different types of eye problems. “I see everything from macular degeneration, glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa, to detachments of the retina. If a patient requires more specialized care, such as surgery, we refer them to our Fallon Clinic ophthalmologists. As is often the case, optometrists like me are the first to spot eye problems since we see patients on a regular basis for examinations.”

During his eye exams, Dr. Brotsky likes to recommend the types of lenses that will help people maximize their vision – such as those with an anti-reflective coating to help with computer and fluorescent light glare and night driving as well as polarized lenses to help protect eyes from the sun. “I think it’s important that my patients are as informed as possible on things that can help their eyes stay healthy.”

As is sometimes the case, Dr. Brotsky is called upon to assist patients who have very urgent eye problems. “One of the great things about Fallon Clinic is that in an emergency, everyone will bend over backward to make sure that the patient will be seen as quickly as possible. If you need to be seen, we will see you – that’s one of the benefits of practicing in a large practice like Fallon Clinic.”

Dr. Brotsky makes it a point to stay informed and up-to-date regarding the latest treatment options for diseases of the eye. “Eyes are a small part of the body, but there are an amazing amount of new treatments and medications being developed. In the future, we could have drops that prevent cataracts from forming and drops that keep the lens in the eye more flexible so you may not need reading glasses as you age.”

When he is not busy with his patients, Dr. Brotsky likes spending as much time as possible with his wife and children. He also likes photography, upgrading and building computers, and is an avid science fiction reader.
