Dr. Michael Burday is one doctor who doesn’t like to keep patients waiting. “I value being on time and almost always run on schedule. I want to get right to a patient’s concerns and help them as much as possible – it’s something I really pride myself on,” he explains.
Dr. Burday first became interested in medicine before he even went to college. “I had a natural interest in science and medical technology when I was younger – that helped draw me initially into medicine. But the longer I am a doctor the more I have come to enjoy the personal aspects of being a physician. I really enjoy interacting with my patients.”
Like many physicians, Dr. Burday sometimes has patients who resist discussing their problems or getting treatment for them. “At times, a patient can be in denial about their problems, such as depression or alcoholism. Sometimes there is a physical problem and they are unable to relate the information. That’s why each examination is really an on-going process to discover what problems the patient might have.”
One of Dr. Burday’s special focuses is treating patients suffering from drug or alcohol abuse. “I have done a lot of work helping people with alcohol and substance abuse. Alcohol abuse is a much more common problem and can medically affect people in a lot of different ways.”
As an internist, Dr. Burday enjoys taking advantage of the latest diagnostic technologies to help patients. “Things are so much easier now. It used to take weeks to get a CAT scan, now they are commonplace. It used to take weeks to get viral tests back – now you can get an influenza test back in two hours. We can also take advantage of genetic testing for a number of different diseases which was never available before.”
Dr. Burday enjoys meeting his patients and forming close, on-going relationships. “I have some patients I have been following for the 30 years I have been with Fallon Clinic. It’s very special to be able to treat someone for three decades. For me, it’s one of the things that makes being a doctor so rewarding and interesting.”
Practicing as an internist, Dr. Burday enjoys taking advantage of all the different Fallon Clinic specialists available to him. “We have such a large support network here. From cardiology to rheumatology, almost every different specialty is covered so we have key expertise in all the major fields. That really helps us deliver a superior level of care for our patients.”
During his free time, Dr. Burday likes to stay physically active by running, working out, playing golf and skiing. He also enjoys gardening and traveling. “I’m also learning how to play the piano, which I really enjoy.”
