Dr. Mark Schrank has been an internist at Fallon Clinic since 1986, starting right after his residency. Working as an internist, he enjoys seeing patients and putting his knowledge and skills to work in diagnosing different illnesses. “In the field of internal medicine, you get to study and see everything,” says Dr. Schrank. “I really enjoy understanding the whole person instead of just the individual parts.”
Dr. Schrank has witnessed a lot of changes in medicine over the years. “Since our base of medical knowledge is always expanding, how individual physicians diagnose and deal with different illnesses is constantly changing. One of the things I like about Fallon Clinic is that it’s easy to connect with specialists in different fields. No one doctor can know everything, and it’s reassuring to have that advanced expertise available when you need it.”
Even though he grew up in New York City, Dr. Schrank has always had a love of nature. “I remember when my family vacationed in the Catskills, I could spend the whole day in the woods exploring. Later, I became fascinated with biology, chemistry and the other natural sciences. I always enjoyed figuring out how things in nature worked and interrelated. I think that curiosity helped put me on the path to becoming a doctor.”
This is where he also developed his love of gardening. It’s quite apparent when you visit his office, which is filled with many plants. When at home, Dr. Schrank gets to put his horticulture skills to work even more. “I have tropical trees and exotic plants in the house, as well as my gardens in the yard,” he explains. “Often they need a lot of tender-loving care to thrive. Fortunately, as a doctor I’m pretty experienced at providing that!”
